Use these online resources for your Revolutions in Thought: Ancient Greece research.


Databases

No matter what your topic, the Middle School library has several databases that will help you research ancient Greek civilization. Try Britannica School or Scholastic Go for some of the best resources.

Famous Fried Falafel 


  • BBC Bitesize - Good summary and overview of some of the most well-known Greeks in ancient times.  Could be a good starting place. 

  • National Geographic - Good short list of some notable Greek leaders and philosophers. 

  • The Biography Channel - Short biographies of some of the most famous Greeks throughout time.  Search ‘Ancient Greece” or “Greek”


Games Goulash


  • BBC Bitesize - Good brief overview of the origin and history of the Olympic Games. 

  • The Ancient Olympics -  A Special Exhibit of the Perseus Digital Library Project.  In-depth information on the ancient Olympic games, including the spirit of the games, the physical location, the political climate, and stories of famous ancient athletes.

  • The British Museum’s Exhibit on the Games at Olympia - Descriptions of each of the various events during the ancient Olympic games.

  • Official Website of the Olympic Movement - Information about the current and future Olympic games, as well as a timeline of past Olympic games and the origins of the Olympics.

  • The Olympic Games in Antiquity - A comprehensive overview of the history of the ancient Olympic games, including the athletes, sports, the awards, and how the games ended.

  • Hellenic Museum - Fun instructions for making your own victor headdress if you have extra time.

  • Facts on File Ancient History - A good, brief summary of achievements in Greek technology and engineering. 

  • Grolier/Scholastic Go: Archimedes - A brief biography and list of inventions by the mathematician and inventor, Archimedes.

  • Britannica Online - This article is quite long, and focuses on both Greek and Roman innovations, but the first half or so is a thorough look at much of the technological progress made in Ancient Greece. 

  • Archimedes War Machines - Brief article describing war machines invented by Archimedes.  More information is available in the databases if you search individual machines. 

  • Make Your Own Archimedes Screw - Instructions to see how you could make your own model of an Archimedes screw at home!

Trireme Tzatziki

  • PBS The Greeks - Good brief summary of triremes and their role in Athenian warfare.

  • Kiddle - Good brief summary of triremes.  Has some neat graphics and photos at the bottom.

  • Museum Ships - Information about the Olympias, a reproduction of a Greek trireme.  Has an interesting look at the typical makeup of a trireme crew. 

  • Facts on File - Detailed article on how triremes were used in Greek naval warfare.


Story Stromboli

  • Mythweb - Great list of myths and ways they are referenced in today’s speech and culture.  Great short place to start and select a specific myth to dive deeper into.

  • Grolier/Scholastic Go “Greek Mythology” - A longer article with brief summaries of a large variety of Greek myths. 

  • Ted-Ed - Short, informative videos.  There are some Egyptian and other myths mixed in as you scroll, so make sure the video you’re watching is a Greek myth. 

  • Once you select a myth, use Britannica or Grolier/Scholastic Go to dive deeper.

  • Hellenic Museum - This site has some great craft templates if you want help structuring helmets or headdresses.

  • ThoughtCo - Good article summarizing pediments and they’ve been used in a variety of nations and civilizations throughout time. 

  • British Museum's Highlighted Objects - Explore the different meanings behind the friezes along the Parthenon. See what they show and why.

  • University of Cambridge - Information about the pediments at the Temple of Zeus at Olympia

  • Neoclassical Structures in Washington DC - References to neoclassical architecture, including pediments, in Washington DC.  Includes great photos.  Use command + F and search “pediment” to find the ones that specifically have pediments.

Numismatics Nosh

  • Ashmolean Museum - Information about and images of ancient Greek coins.

  • World History Encyclopedia - Information and history about ancient Greek coinage.

  • Britannica - Brief description of the Greek drachma.

  • The Collector - Great images and descriptions of ancient Greek coins by the city state they were minted in.  Describes the symbols chosen and the history of each coin.

  • Tales of Time Forgotten - Discusses the use of the lambda symbol on Spartan shields.  Here’s a cool set of directions to make your own helmet to complete the look.

  • Bitcoin Connections:

  • Scholastic Go “Cryptocurrency” - Gets a little in the weeds, but the first couple of paragraphs provide a good overview of the idea of cryptocurrency.

  • Parallel Currencies in Historical Perspective - Do not start at the top.  Scroll to page 5.  There is brief section on how different currencies were used in and amongst the different city states and how that impacted the value of money.

  • BBC Bitesize - Great short summary video on common terms + practices with ancient Greek theater. 

  • Youth Theatre at the U - Great summary of ancient Greek theater customs, history, and architectural features.  Also has images + diagrams. 

  • How to Design a Movie Poster - This article is a little long, but it does a thorough job of summarizing principles of movie poster design.  Scroll closer to the bottom for a breakdown of traditional aesthetics for different genres of films. 

  • Movie Poster Tutorials in Canva - A starting place to see examples of movie poster structures.  You could pick one as a starting point to customize and make your own.

Monster Mashup

  • Theoi - List of common monsters in Greek mythology.  Good starting place.

  • Mythopedia - Great list of monsters and their origins from ancient Greek mythology.

  • National Geographic - Click through the photo slideshow for some ancient Greek monsters and the fossils that may have inspired them. 

  • Facts on File Ancient and Medieval History - Once you’ve decided on a creature, search in this database.  Lots of great articles on a wide variety of Greek monsters.

  • Big Huge Labs Trading Card Maker - This tool has a fair number of ads, but can be a cool way to generate a custom trading card if you upload an original graphic or photo.

  • History Channel - Summary of Hercules and his twelve labors.

  • The Collector - A detailed breakdown of the myth of Jason and the Argonauts

  • Free Tools For Making Multimedia Projects - Canva (log in with Google), Adobe Express (log in with Google), iMovie (on the iPads)

  • Multimedia Resources - Links from our library website to free-to-use video clips, images, and sounds that can be used in your projects.

  • Hippocrates of Cos  - here via EBSCO Host.  Thorough and concise overview.

  • Harvard Library - Great brief description of humoral theory.  Scroll past the document viewer/slider to read the rest of the article.

  • National Library of Medicine - Great thorough breakdown of how the study of medicine evolved in Greece over time. 


Constellation Cannoli

  • Britannica - Great initial list to start from when picking a constellation to investigate.

  • American Association of Amateur Astronomers - Great descriptions of individual constellations.  Click on the name of each constellation for further details and illustrations. 

  • Scholastic Go - Has individual pages on many of the constellations. 

  • Theoi - Dense but thorough descriptions of myths behind many of the major constellations.  Great resource for a deeper dive once you’ve picked a constellation to zoom in on.
